Isn't this Twelve Step work? Why do I have to pay?

Coaching is NOT Twelve Step work. It is a professional service for which I have been formally trained. I focus my services toward people in Twelve Step recovery for two reasons. First, as someone working their own Twelve Step program, I am intimately aware of how effectively professional coaching can support the Twelve Step process. Coaching techniques allow us to bypass fear, and when we can do that, it’s much easier to identify our Higher Power’s will for us. Second, I am also intimately aware of the how the experience of addiction, whether it’s your own or a loved one’s, can create distorted perceptions of life, of others, and of ourselves. Coaching is extremely effective at breaking through those distorted views and allowing us to see our own Truth. I want to support people going beyond just relief from their affliction, I want them to become the fullest incarnation of the person their Higher Power put them here to be. This is why I do what I do.

How is coaching different from therapy, or even sponsorship?

Therapy is a paid service for a process conducted with a licensed counselor to diagnose and heal a psychological or emotional disorder using cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal and psychodynamic methods.  Sponsorship is a free-will offering of another’s experience, strength and hope in recovery.  Coaching is neither sponsorship nor therapy.  It does not diagnose disorders.  In fact, its purpose is to bring forth a client’s inherent wholeness from within. (IMHO, that inherent wholeness is the divine within each of us.) Coaching is a paid professional service where a coach a body of exercises and tools proven to bypass the fear-centers in the brain (in the amygdala), in order to connect a client with their own resourcefulness and their own answers, to support them in meeting their own goals.  My own 14-year experience working the 12-Steps uniquely qualifies me to design these professional coaching tools to support those whose goal is 12-Step recovery.

Coaching Sounds Kinda “Woo” To Me. How Does It Really Work?

Coaching uses established psychological and neurological principles and techniques that allow your brain to side-step negative thought and behavior patterns that stand in the way of anything you may want for yourself in life, whether this is personal, professional or spiritual goals and dreams. A coach uses powerful and transformational questions, visualizations, and even physical body movements to help you connect with your deepest values and your own personal Truth. Yes, I know these terms sound kind of esoteric and “woo,” but research on coaching has shown that these things are much, much more effective at motivating you to take action in the direction of your goals than sheer willpower, or even trying to analyze what stands in the way of you taking action will ever be.

Therefore, in order for coaching to be most effective for you, it is important to step into the coaching relationship with an open mind, commitment, persistence, and a willingness to invest time, energy and resources toward your goals. As you do that, your confidence will skyrocket, and you will build even more momentum that will further strengthen your motivation. You will learn, build skills and personal awareness, and enjoy the personal fulfillment and satisfaction that comes with achieving your goals.

What Happens In The Recovery Blocks Session?

It’s actually important to explain what happens before the Recovery Blocks Breakthrough Session before we talk about the Recovery Blocks Session itself. When you sign up for an Introductory Session, I will send you a questionnaire that you will fill out and return to me before our session. The questions on the form help me identify some of the most important things you want for yourself, and what might be getting in the way. It is imperative that you fill this form out and return it before your Recovery Blocks Breakthrough Session since the Session cannot be effective without it. Be prepared; the questions in the Recovery Blocks Breakthrough Session Questionnaire are hard and will require reflection on your part. They may even trigger some emotions and grief you have around challenges you’ve faced or things you’re still struggling with. Have courage and make sure you allow yourself the time you need to work through the questions and return the form before your Introductory Session.
During the Recovery Blocks Breakthrough Session, I will support you in getting clear about the things you want for yourself and what it would mean for you and others if you succeeded in getting them. I will then give you a brief experience of coaching around one small goal you have so you can experience for yourself how coaching works. You will leave the session with definite actions you can take to make progress on that goal. The last part of the session will be devoted to exploring how you could benefit by working with a coach and considering if now is the right time for you to make that commitment and investment in yourself.

Where Do Coaching Sessions Happen?

Most coaching is done either over the phone or via the Internet using WebEx or Skype, which makes coaching incredibly convenient – you invest only the time devoted to your session and do not lose time traveling to meet your coach. If you live in the Twin Cities area, I will be happy to meet with you in a mutually agreed location, provided that location is conducive to the work we need to do. (Coffee shops are not conducive to this as there is too much noise and too many distractions.) Many of my local clients start with in-person sessions and later switch to phone or Internet sessions to save themselves a little bit of time.

What Happens After the First Session?

The focus of our regular coaching sessions will change over time, but each coaching session follows the same structure. Each session begins with a brief two-minute check in, and then I will ask you what the best outcome would be for you at the end of the session, how you would know if we have accomplished it, and clarifying the value that outcome would bring to your life. I will then ask you the transformational questions that will support achieving that outcome and guide you through powerful visualizations that will clarify what you need to do to achieve it and why that is important.
Please be assured that even though part of my job is to hold you accountable for following through on your plans, I will provide a safe, non-judgmental place to explore new possibilities, to regroup when you run into obstacles, and to celebrate each success, no matter how small. I will encourage focused self-reflection. I will also challenge you where it seems appropriate and offer honest feedback if requested.
But the focus stays on your goals and all the answers come from you. I provide the structure and the tools; in answering the questions and participating in the visualizations and other coaching exercises, you provide all the answers.
In fact, this is what makes coaching soooo incredibly effective. My clients often describe having frantically searched “out there” – in books, in friends, in therapists – for the answers to their struggles, and desperately trying each “solution” offered, only to end up disappointed and demoralized when it didn’t work. When they went through the coaching process, these clients finally recognized their own Truth, and were able to create plans that grew out of this understanding of themselves. This might all sound mysterious and obscure, but I can assure you it works. My clients often say that everything finally makes sense after working with me. What they need to do. Why things didn’t work before. What is important to them and why. They see how their lives work so much better when they honor those Truths that come up in our transformational conversations.
No one else has your Truth. Not even me. My job is to help you recognize it. When you commit wholeheartedly and with an open mind to this process, when you take action on the Truth that comes out of our sessions, things change. Your perspective changes. Your life takes off.

How Many Sessions Do I Need to Buy?

Because coaching is not a quick fix, I sell my coaching sessions in packages of 3 sessions per month, with one week off as an implementation week. This is the minimum investment required to get started. How many sessions you purchase beyond the initial three depends on your goals. I typically work with my clients for 3-6 months, but sometimes for up to a year. You will save money by purchasing more than one month at a time. Once they’ve met their initial goals, many of my clients periodically schedule individual sessions to fine tune their goals or if they’re starting new projects. What Happens Between Sessions?

You work on the actions you identified in the previous session. You contact me when needed or desired to report any wins you experience or to ask for help if you run into any glitches. You will also want to reflect on what you want to accomplish in the next session. I will occasionally ask you to fill out an Experience Evaluation form to help us reflect on what is working and where you still have challenges so we can make our work together as effective as it can be.

How Will I Know You Are The Right Coach For Me?

You will have an experience of me as a coach during our Introductory Session, and during that session, together we will determine if we are a good fit. You will already have an experience of what I can do for you before you say “yes.” You will also know if you enjoyed the experience, if you felt safe in our discussions, and if you feel optimistic, motivated, excited, motivated and energized at the end of our session.

I do not charge for brief emails or calls shorter than 10 minutes.
